Tyvek® Banner Installation - How to Properly Install a Tyvek® Banner

Some tips on hanging a Tyvek® banner:
  • Folding over corners will increase the durability of banners and reduce corner tearing
  • Use high-tack double-sided banner tape for greater strength
  • Grommets or adhesive grommet tabs should always be placed through two layers of Tyvek®
  • Special attention must be paid to hemming and grommeting as these are the expected failure points. Keep in mind that as the square footage of the banner increases, it is important to increase the number of tie points.
  • The hem should be finished with double sided adhesive banner tape or stitched. If metal grommets are used, they should be set with a press, not hand hammered, to ensure uniformity and proper application.
  • Also recommend are adhesive reinforcing tabs such as Banner-Ups. Best strength will be obtained by putting grommets right through the tab and the hem.
  • Use shock absorbing cords (bungee cords) instead of plastic zip ties which have a tendency to fail. Bungee cords help absorb the shock of wind gusts and also help equilibrate the load from grommet to grommet.

Technical Properties of Material Concepts’ Tyvek® Banner Media

Material 100% HDPE
Gauge 10.3 +/-2 mil
Weight 140 g/m2
Opacity 96
Whiteness >120
Printer/Ink Compatibility Encad, ColorSpan, Hewlett-Packard, Mimaki, Roland, Mutoh and Epson Series dye and pigment-based inks. The cutting mechanism should be disabled when printing on this material. Use only with aqueous or dye-based inks. Not for use with solvent-based inks.
Software Settings When using this material with Encad GO inks, utilize the UCR (Under Color Removal) technique that replaces composite black (CMY) with the appropriate amount of black ink. To optimize print quality, printers should be set for the highest print quality and media selection should be "heavy coated." Ink coverage up to 350% is recommended.
Color Matching For the best and most consistent results, a profile should be created using an external color calibrator in conjunction with your RIP and color matching software.
Light Fastness The fading time of ink jet ink is a direct result of the inks that are used and the environment where the print is displayed. Contact the ink manufacturer to determine suitability for any application.
Water Resistance and Surface Protection To obtain a high degree of water resistance, use only pigmented ink. Allow the print to dry for 24 hours before exposing to moisture. Lamination is not required. Ink saturation over 250% can affect the water fast properties and show ink bleed. Dye-based inks will yield good color gamut, but bleeding may occur when the image gets wet. Over laminating dye-based ink will not eliminate image bleed, unless the material is completely sealed to a non-porous surface. To avoid perforating the laminate, use banner tape instead of sewing (see below). Dirt and stains cannot be cleaned from the imaged surface and the surface can be damaged from excessive folding or creasing.
Tape Banner tape can be used and is preferred to sewing.
Grommeting Grommets should be placed in the hemline along the length of the banner so that the grommet is through two layers. Corner grommets should be placed where the length and width hems cross, so that the grommet is through four layers. A reinforced corner is also recommended to increase durability.
Optimal Service Environment For printing: 60-80°F, 50% Relative Humidity.
Handling Recommendations Due to the absorptive nature of the coating, you should avoid touching the coated surface of the material. It is always recommended that cotton gloves be used when handling ink jet coated materials. Rolls are supplied with the coated side facing out on a 2" core.
Ideal Storage Conditions 70°F (21 °C), 50% Relative Humidity (a controlled environment is recommended); store in original packaging.
Shelf Life Greater than 1 year from ship date when stored in proper conditions. Store in original packaging and keep closed until ready to use.
Durability In outdoor use, Tyvek® banners will last approximately 3 months, depending on weather conditions.
